Real brides give the best advice and one of the brides featured is Jodie Francis, Bride to Be designer who wore a Karen Willis Holmes RTW Ashley gown and looked nothing less than stunning.

Jodie shares much practical advice from her surprise proposal to a beautiful wedding at Snapper Beach Reserve on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

As well as helpful advice from brides, there is plenty of wedding inspiration, tips from stylists and suppliers and a great wedding supplier contact list.

Paris Haute Couture 2012…

This is our favourite time of the year! Haute couture fashion houses brought their Spring-Summer lines down the runway in Paris and without further ado, here are our favourites…

GIVENCHY OFCOURSE! They have to be my favourite in terms of personal style. The 10 piece couture line-up was inspired by the 1927 Fritz Lang movie Metropolis and the theme music from a more obscure Russian film, 1924's Aelita: Queen of Mars. I am certainly a fan of the Art Deco embellishments and the meticulous work with crocodile skin. To understand some of the work that goes on behind the scenes of a couture show - the scales on the hide were individually cut and numbered. After it had been treated, the artisans had to restitch them one by one in order onto a tulle body stocking. It took 350 hours to make!

After an 8 year hiatus from couture, we were very excited about Versace. Their fabulous creations were made to emphasise the voluptuous curve of a woman's body and embellished from top to bottom in beads. The curves were further highlighted with curving gold metal insets that raised up the shoulders or added to the curve of hips.

There were so many stunning frocks by Dior that are fantasy worthy. This show exhibited pure craftsmanship. We learnt through style.com that ‘On one dress, black crocodile scales were randomly picked out in patent. On another, ostrich had been dissected into paillettes of skin, like a body map. On yet another, sequins traced a grid, like a pattern-maker's directives’. The collection was perfectly unpolished, with the structure of the dresses showing through sheer fabrics. We loved every inch of this collection!

Giambattista Valli’s show was a visual and textural feast. Employing old school couture approaches, he showered the glamorous creations with flowers , embellished lace and sequins. The collection had a dramatic appeal and Valli did mention Ava Gardner to a guest who guessed that a little Hollywood glamour may be involved in his collection.

Happy Australia Day...

We hope everyone enjoys their Australia Day break and makes the most of their day off. In keeping with the celebration of Australia Day we would like to share a few snaps of our brides wearing their Australian made Karen Willis Holmes gown with a beautiful Aussie backdrop.

Angela wore the Rebecca gown when she married Simon at The Immigration Museum in Victoria – ‘We are both first-generation Australians and discovered our families’ immigration records while visiting The Immigration Museum one day. We decided the Museum was a great venue to celebrate our past and future.’

Below are photos from Paula and Timothy’s wedding in Noosa. Paula looks delightful in the RTW Paige gown. They had their reception at their favourite restaurant Sails, which is something to keep in mind next time your travels take you to beautiful Noosa!

Real Bride...

Jordana and Adam are ‘unofficial’ high school sweethearts, being in the same year at school, they only got together after their formal. Then exactly nine years later they tied the knot at Central Synagogue and celebrated their big day at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney.

Jordana and Adam had an 'industrial chic theme’ with black, whites and a hint of pink, the inspiration coming from ‘graphic prints and lots of bridal blogs!'. With her wedding gown, Jordana ‘added a black bow to the back of the dress (to bring in the black and white theme) and for the bridesmaids, they had the same ivory sash around their dress. I also added my grandmother’s handkerchief to the inside of the dress, she was very important to me and wanted to have her close to me on my day’.

‘I fell in love with two dresses and it was Karen who helped me choose the gown, asking me “which would your fiancé prefer?” – I hadn't even thought about him up until then. I shopped with my mum, but after I chose the gown, my mother-in-law and aunties came for a viewing.’

Jordana’s advice to future brides: ‘be sure to have one extra person, other than your mum watching how to put you in the dress. Thankfully I took one bridesmaid – it was stressful enough for mum without the sole responsibility of getting me in the dress!’

We wish Jordana and Adam a very happy married life and a big thank you to Jordana and her mum for being so wonderful at the fittings.

About mid-way through last year, we started thinking about how we can share with the world what goes into making a wedding gown, and specifically what goes into making a KAREN WILLIS HOLMES wedding gown.

We wanted to share with our brides, their family and friends, our suppliers, our employees… and even the grooms! WHY? Because we love what we do and are very proud of our label. We are proud that it is more than just a ‘business’. It is a craft. It requires hours of passion, skill, love and precision.

We are proud that all of this takes place is Australia and we a very proud when we see brides wearing our dresses.

We were contacted by Untitled films at about making a video and as soon as we saw the magic they create, we knew this is what we’ve been looking for!

Introducing…Brooke

The graceful Brooke gown is joining our RTW collection and we just adore it! Brooke has a very pleasing V-neck bodice which is precisely draped and ruched to create a soft look that beautifully contrasts with the intricate diamanté details embellished on the waist and shoulders. These embellishments can be removed to create a cleaner look. The skirt is also versatile in that the train is detachable.

Golden Globes 2012

The 69th Golden Globes awards have commenced in Beverley Hills, Los Angeles. Host Ricky Gervais is doing what he is brilliant at and the stars do what their brilliant at: strut the red carpet! Here is our pick of what’s hot... and what’s, well... a tad tepid.

Nicole Kidman’s Versace number is our most favourite gown. The workmanship looks exquisite and the fit is lovely, giving her curves in all the right spots.

We love the gorgeous colour of this Lanvin dress worn by Emma-Stone.

We are liking the sequins in Evan Rachel Wood’s Gucci dress. The KARENWILLIS HOLMES couture ‘Claudia’ gown (below) features similar sequin detail and silhouette with a more demure v neckline highlighting the decolletage.

Rooney Mara has had a stellar red carpet run while promoting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo around the world, and her golden globes gown by Nina Ricci is a continuation of the style she has established for herself – sleek, sophisticated and edgy!

This gown is a bit of a ‘miss’ for Angelina Jolie. While the fit and tailoring is impecable we aren’t quite sure about the red detailing.

Gorgeous Charlize Theron in Dior

The 25-year-old Glee star wore an antique embroidered illusion dress by Marchesa in stunning pewter hue. Lea’s bold and dramatic choice is certainly a fashion forward choice for these awards.

Coming soon to KAREN WILLIS HOLMES is the KWH collection featuring beautifully embellished sequin bias gowns with hand beaded and embroidered back motif detail.

Embellishment

What girl doesn’t love a bit of embellishment, it can be as simple as a gorgeous pair or drop earrings. Highlight and draw attention to your waist with an embellished belt or go for the wow factor in an all over embellished gown such as the ‘Keisha’ gown.

Draw inspiration from a variety of sources such as a piece of embellished embroidery or a ‘LOVE’ sign made from five cent pieces.

The new KAREN WILLIS HOLMES Statement Couture gown is absolutely stunning!!!!

The French Chantilly lace jacket features a v-neckline and peplum style hem.

The Peplum is a trend from the 1940’s (a decade I love!) when women wore peplum-appended coats and dresses as a way to draw attention to a tiny waist and hourglass figure.

The shoulders of the jacket have also been applied with hand cut and hand stitched lace motifs to texturize the area and build up the neckline.

The lace jacket sits atop of a fitted bodice with topstitching detail on the bust and a heavy twill fishtail panel skirt with an exaggerated train for a dramatic silhouette effect.

The waist is highlighted with the Art Deco Belt, currently available online.

KAREN WILLIS HOLMES Couture is a custom service. Starting with a 1.5 hour design consultation Karen works with you to design your perfect gown. The gown is made to order and involves five fittings with Karen starting with a calico toile.

The cost involved for a couture gown depends of course on the design, with the average price between $6,000 and $14,000.

Vintage

Think delicate laces, pastel colour, and a wonderful array of mismatched decorations scatter across tables.

Inspired by the feminine pink shade I have designed the ‘Faith’ gown featuring a vintage inspired waisted silhouette in a custom made ‘Vintage Pink’ shade by combining ivory, nude and pink layers of tulle together. The ‘Faith’ gown also features lace applique had stitched to the bodice of the gown which is finished with a pink velvet ribbon tie with crystal drop ends.

Complete your look with a lace edged or birdcage veil.

Real Bride...

Stella & Minh

Stella met Minh through one of her bridesmaids, Julia, who jokingly told Minh ‘there was no way Stella would go for him. Minh took this as a challenge and a few months later, succeeded!’ – And now 8 years later they exchanged vows and celebrated an elaborate wedding day at Carousel, Albert Park Lake.

Apart from Stella looking nothing but perfect in her KWH couture gown, the whole day was delicately planned and judging from photos we are sharing with you, both Stella and Minh have great taste and all the details of their wedding day are simply beautiful. With the help from A Lavish Affair, their inspiration was a rather regal theme and they drew ideas from ‘mansions, gold detailing, apricot/peach and gold…. I wanted a royal mansion and a feeling of luxury!’ – Which worked beautifully at the location and complimented her KWH gown as Stella was after something ‘vintage, with different textures, soft and feminine’.

Minh's proposal was a surprise at the snow - ‘Since our first year of dating, Minh and I would make a trip to the snow every year for the past 7 years. At times we would go alone, other times we would have friends come up with us. This year, we had a group of friends join us and they all knew that Minh was going to propose. Towards the end of the second day, some of our friends decided to head home but I wanted ‘one last run’ down the peak of the mountain. I guess Minh took this as an opportunity and gave everyone a little look to say, ‘this is it! All our friends got the message and headed home, Minh and I took the chairlift up to the peak alone. After getting off at the peak, Minh suggested we take a break after a long day and enjoy the view before the day ends. We sat down and as soon as my bottom hit the snow, he jumped up, settled on one knee and proposed. I was speechless and couldn't say anything until he had to ask, “Is that a yes?” to which I replied, “of course!”

We want to thank Jerry Ghionis Photography and videographer Marcus from C2 video for his enchanting work (below). They have captured Stella and Minh’s day beautifully and created wonderful memories for their friends and family to remember.

A huge thanks to Stella and Minh for sharing their day with us and we wish them the best of luck with their married life togther!

Anna use to be part of the KWH team, and I am a huge supporter of her work with Luke for ROMANCE WAS BORN. Their creativity, aesthetic and design is inspiring and I was lucky enough to collaborate with them on two wedding gowns for their Spring/Summer 2012 runway show.

Real Bride...Naomi

Naomi and Dave met on a Sunday afternoon at a gig at the Old Bar in Johnston Street, Fitzroy. Dave was playing in the band and a mutual friend introduced them. Four and a half years later Dave proposed to Naomi in Prague, on the shores of the river Vltava - “He then took me to dinner at the Four Seasons- best dinner of our lives! There was a lot of planning required to propose where he did- and he was acting up, so I was on to him!”

On the 15^th October 2011, Naomi and Dave were married at St John’s Uniting Church, Elsternwick, which is where her parents and grandparents exchanged vows too!

The inspiration was drawn from their own interests – “Dave is a musician, I am a graphic designer. We wanted everything to be low-key yet classy and full of love and laughs, good food and music.” Judging from their photos, which were taken by Louisa Bailey (who has captured the day and the mood immaculately!!!), I think they could not have made it better!

In regards to the dress, Naomi says she was looking for “something different, but unmistakably bridal. I love art deco, and the old Hollywood era fashions that were so feminine, simple and elegant. I searched online and came upon the image of the KWH Ava gown as featured at a Blvgari event and knew I wanted to AT LEAST try it on. It was the only dress that came close, I wasn’t really interested in anything else”

We wish Naomi and Dave the best wishes for their future together and thank you for sharing their day with us. It was an absolute pleasure making Naomi's gown!

Stephanie and Declan

We'd love to share beautiful bride Stephanie's wedding day photo with you. Steph and Declan got married on the 24th of September 2011.

Although it was rainy, it didnt stop Stephanie and Declan from having a great day! Besides, rain on your wedding day is considered to be good luck!

Stephanie looked gorgeous, she wore the ‘Victoria’ gown from the Karen Willis Holmes Ready to Wear collection. ‘Victoria’ is a full lace gown with a fitted bodice and a soft skirt that flows into a train, finished off with a velvet ribbon and crystal drops.

The reception looked elegant and beautiful and even had a candy buffet (YUM!)

Celebrity Wedding...

Lauren Bush exchanged vows with David Lauren over Labour Day weekend in a 200-year-old barn on the designer's sprawling 17,000-acre Colorado ranch in front of 200 guests.

Lauren, niece of former President George W. Bush and granddaughter of former President George H.W. Bush, married David Lauren, the youngest son of fashion legend Ralph Lauren in a wedding that felt western inspired and tranquil, without compromising with the glamour of a celebrity wedding.

The dress? Well, it doesn’t get any easier if your father in law to be is the masterful Ralph Lauren. The end result took 100 craftsmen more than 3,000 hours to create. The top layer of the gown, made of antique ivory tulle, was hand-embroidered with flowers and Renaissance-era scroll designs in silk and metallic thread. Swarovski Elements crystals and off-white pearl beads finished off the look.

Apart from the stunning dress, we love David's proposal story:

David suggested they meet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to look at some new pictures before attending a holiday dinner nearby. Because they met at the Costume Institute gala in 2004 and have celebrated that anniversary by attending every Met gala since, the museum is one of the couple’s favourite sentimental places. When Lauren arrived at the place where they had agreed to meet, no one was there except David. The artwork he wanted her to see was not the museum’s latest Old Masters acquisition but photographs of the couple that spanned their seven happy years together, blown up and displayed around the room. “I created our own exhibition of our life together,” David says. “And I got down on my knee and proposed. Then we went outside and took a carriage ride with a clarinetist and a saxophonist following us.”

We are very proud to say that our gowns are designed and made in Australia. We don’t produce our gowns in an offshore factory where materials are cheap and work conditions may be questionable, Karen Willis Holmes RTW and couture dresses are made with love at our studio in Sydney.

We also make our gowns for each individual bride as oppose to having them mass produced, this allows us to make certain alterations to a wedding dress, making them unique and fitting just perfectly!

Titima & Franco

It was all fate and destiny for Titima and Franco, who met by chance and have been together since November 2009 with a ‘cocktail style wedding’ on 5^th June 2011, a date they believed to be lucky.

The wedding venue was at the Bridges restaurant in Hurstbridge, Victoria which funnily enough, Titima and Franco found by chance ‘while on the way to another reception centre.’ The reception had a ‘party type atmosphere’ and a ‘hot pink’ theme.

Titima wore the ‘Dakota’ gown from the Karen Willis Holmes ready to wear collection in Melbourne and loved ‘the style of the gown’s sleeve and lace,’ it is ‘very elegant and beautiful.’ She also rocked amazing heels from Alanpinkus. Titima looked absolutely stunning!

Titima and Franco’s special day was captured by Dansk Photography, the photographer’s style is what captured their attention. The MC for the wedding was DJ James, who also provided the music. The cake was by Greensborough – looks delicious! Both DJ James and Greensborough were highly recommended by the staff at Bridges.

I would like to introduce you to a real gem I came across through my gorgeous couture bride Stella Tio.

Stella sent me a link to her wedding video and it is the BEST wedding video I’ve seen. C2-Video did a fabulous job to capturing Stella and Minh’s wedding in Melbourne. I know many people have mixed feelings regarding wedding videos and so did I before I came across C2-Vidoes work, it was classy and charming...the video had a wonderful warm mood to it... just perfect really!

Liz Hurley

Liz Hurley first caught my fashion eye when she wore the Versace safety pin dress in 1994 and is now set to marry Australian cricket legend Shane Warne.

I think her wedding to Shane Warne will be traditional yet star-studded celebration with sporting stars and celebrities topping the guest lists and fingers crossed the celebrations will take place in Australia, where the couple can enjoy a traditional Aussie outdoor or harbour wedding.

For Liz’s wedding gown, I imagine that she will want to accent her body conscious fashion sense with a figure hugging mermaid silhouette, perhaps with that all important antipodean twist.

The gown, in a soft pearl shade will be made with delicate layers of silk chiffon, one of Liz’s favourite fabric and will feature a v-neckline with intricate lace sleeves – a strong bridal trend of the moment to soften the look.

Hand embroidered and appliqué lace detailing on the torso will accentuate the design and inner corsetry of the gown as well as Liz’s stunning silhouette and will become more prominent with sculptured layers of lace featured on the skirt and train of the gown. Not forgetting that Liz does love her jewels, a diamante belt completes the look.

Angela & Simon

Angela and Simon met at a party 15 years ago and on the 3^rd of September this year they “had a lovely, small wedding full of laughter, fabulous food and wine. We are grateful to everyone who helped make our day special and will always remember it with a smile”

Angela and Simon had a lunchtime wedding at The Immigration Museum “We are both first-generation Australians and discovered our families’ immigration records while visiting The Immigration Museum one day. We decided the Museum was a great venue to celebrate our past and future.”

Angela wore the Rebecca gown from Karen Willis Holmes Ready-to-Wear in Melbourne. I cannot imagine a more perfect gown for her. It suits her in every single way and is a very flattering choice. We love that Angela added the halter-neck – just perfect!

Angela especially likes the fact that her gown is “by an Australian designer, and it wasn’t too layered or bulky. We had a lunchtime wedding, so I wanted a more simple dress. I love the fabric, the clean lines gathering at the hip (perfect for attaching a vintage piece of jewellery to), and the corset. I also love the halter piece Enza attached to the dress for me”

“My jewellery is vintage-inspired. It’s by Wendy Louise, an Australian designer (bought from Kattina Fashion Accessories). This includes the piece on the dress, bracelet and hairclip.”

Angela’s photographer Tizia May has captured the whole day wonderfully – “with outstanding results”. Tizia sent us these lovely images for our blog and she also said how beautiful Angela was and that they were a great couple to work with. We are so happy that we contributed to Angela’s big day and very glad she enjoyed wearing our gown!

Faith gown

We are all in love with the new Faith gown! It became an instant favourite with a lot of our staff here which is great feedback! With a hint of being something different, it is a proud new addition to our Ready to wear collection. Faith is layered in a soft vintage pink shade with dainty ivory lace appliqué detail. We’ve used four shades of tulle to get this perfect soft vintage pick colour, however, it can be made in an ivory shade as well.

Sir Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell married last Sunday at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London. Paul and Nancy have been together since 2007 and got engaged in May. His youngest daughter, 7-year-old Beatrice, served as the flower girl for the ceremony.

With a busy Fashion Week on her mind, Stella McCartney succeeded not only to design new stepmom Nancy Shevell's wedding gown and dad Paul McCartney's suit, she also designed the bridesmaid dresses for Sunday's ceremony. Nancy wore a knee-length white dress with covered buttons down the front. You can have a look at more from Stella latest collection here.

The guests included former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr and his wife, Barbara Bui, 1960s supermodel Twiggy and her husband, Leigh Lawson, Barbara Walters (who is related to Shevell), Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, artist Peter Blake and Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison, who was dressed all in black.

Continued! Paris Fashion Week...

And it just keeps getting better and better! Our personal favorite Alexander McQueen, not to mention Chanel and Ellie Saab are all generating excitement with their Spring/Summer 2012 collections… Check out the latest and be inspired!

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN is not only one of the greats, but also one of our personal favorites here at Karen Willis Holmes. Designer Sarah Burton did not fail to disappoint, with the show described as ‘underwater magic’, infused with oceanic life and colour.

Portraying fashion-as-theatre, the dreamlike feel had a sense of serene femininity and obsessive attention to detail!

The extreme detailing in the collection featured lace balaclavas with degrade’ edges and fortuny-pleated organza woven with copper, silver and gold. Beautifully pleated and draped, this collection is certainly breathtaking.

We always look forward to the production that CHANEL engineers, and the Paris show was definitely up to standard with The Grand Palais transformed by huge, blinding white sea shapes such ascorals, shells, sea horses and stingrays.

Taking inspiration from natural processes that have been taking place under the sea for millions of years, Lagerfeld brought a fresh modernity to the catwalk. He added a lightness to the usual Chanel style through the use of new fabrics that quite literally shimmered and shone, complimented by the use of pearls.

‘Colour Shock’ is the name of ELIE SAAB'S Spring/Summer 2012 collection, and rightly so with some vivid shades heating up the catwalk.

Sequins played a large role in Saab’s garments, and the embellishment shone. Floaty silhouettes and thigh-high splits also enhanced the drama and accentuated the femininity and true glamour of the collection. The jewel toned emerald green numbers were definitely show-stoppers.

SPRING ISSUE

We are proud to say that our Ready to Wear gown is on the cover of the spring issue of Bride magazine!!! The elegant Samantha gown is a vintage inspired silk satin wedding gown with diamante shoulder and belt detail. The bias skirt flows into a small train, which also looks great when its bustled up. For me, the best thing about this gown is the fabric, I just love the way it sits on the body.

The magazine has packed with practical advice from choosing the right shape to jewellery dilemmas. The special Real Brides section will be very useful for all you brides to be, it is great to get advice from brides who’ve done it all before and see snaps from an actual wedding rather than a photoshoot.

My favourite section of the magazine is on hints from the other half - The Grooms! ‘More and more men are getting involved in the wedding planning, so here is the bloke's guide to getting married. Read a true story from a real-life groom who revelled in the planning of his special day.’

Paris Fashion Week...

So far, so fabulous!

We are loving what Givenchy, Ackermann and Lanvin have paraded on the Paris Spring/Summer 2012 runway!

Here are a few of our picks:

Alber Ebaz for LANVIN is one of those designers who knows how to dress a woman and season after season he revitalises his signature look and statements ‘Modernity is beauty’. Creating a powerful and modern woman with elements of sportswear, unfinished elements and chiffon fabric dresses pleated but still sheer and revealing.

Haider Ackermann is one of my favourite designers. The collection consisted of a mixture of relaxed tailored menswear with a subtle 80’s twist that Ackermann describes as ‘rockabilly Lord Byron’ with shapeless boxy jackets, oversized pants and models in flats. With such a fantastic use of colour from rich khaki and orange silks, sheer royal blues, aubergine and blush tones, Ackermann may not have created wearable clothing with dresses that were completely see-through from the waist up but the colour palette was to die for and refined in a season that has seen an excessive use of prints!

Riccardo Tisci for GIVENCHY has hit the spot for us: TAILORING!

The designer used surfers and mermaids as influences but clearly this was not literal in any sense. Jackets that focused on sharp and strong tailoring, contrasted with undulating lapels and laser cut outs in soft pinks, off white and army khaki greens. Curved hems, skin tight pants and a mixture of sheer overlapping fabrics were features of the collection and we also couldn’t go past the shark-tooth heels and sequined eye detailing.

Milan Fashion Week...

Following the London Fashion Week, the Milan Fashion Week was held from 21^st September until 27^th September and I would love to share with you my favourite collections and designs that have inspired everyone at Karen Willis Holmes

Gucci’s collection reflected a crossover between modern society and the 1920s. Gucci showcased sequined dresses, fringes, pleats, cropped jackets and pencil pants. The collection has a lot of black, gold and white, it is very ‘vintage glamour’ and shouts a bold personality which is what I like about it.

I also really liked the Giorgio Armani collection, there was a lot of black and dark blue and was inspired by the Sahara.

Dolce and Gabbana’s collection was simply vibrant. It featured lace, cocktail dresses and sequins.

Versace showcased a very structural and feminine collection.
