Gothic Glamour

With such a fabulously bright sunny start to another week in our gorgeous city, we thought it would be the perfect time to share with you some fantastic new images we have, courtesy of the brilliant photographer, Josie Lee and very talented stylist Jam Baylon.
With what can only be described as “goth glamour”, this photo shoot has taken the soft beauty that is often associated with bridal gowns and twisted and contorted it with striking results, creating some truly beautiful images.

We love this new take on our gowns, especially when you consider that each of these looks are still very wearable for your wedding day. At Karen Willis Holmes we have always loved the black and white combination – it is such a simple way to lift a traditional gown and give it a more modern and sexy look. You can see that even dramatic costume jewellery can totally transform your whole gown’s look and feel.

Thank you to Josie and Jam for sharing their beautiful images with us. To see more of their amazing work, view their portfolios at the links below.

Real Weddings... Edith and Michael

At Karen Willis Holmes, we love when our brides share their photos with us from their wedding. It is so wonderful to see how all the elements come together on the big day, and also to see how each bride puts her signature on the gown they have chosen.

Today we are lucky enough to share a “Real Wedding” story that is very close to our hearts. One of our employees from the Paddington store, Edith, married in October 2009 and has kindly allowed us to share with you the story and photos of her wedding.

Michael and Edith

Edith and Michael had been dating for about 9 years when he proposed while holidaying in Europe. “Michael had planned to propose in Paris when we were going to go to the ballet and out for a beautiful dinner,” said Edith. “But after he lost his credit card in Barcelona, the location was scaled back to a beautiful bridge where he proposed with the Art Deco engagement ring that belonged to his grandmother”.

Then, with a date set for Friday October 23rd, Edith and Michael began planning for their big day.

Deciding on the beautiful Carrington Hotel in Katoomba for the location was the natural choice, after having spent several anniversaries in the area. “We love the cold, the antique stores, and the natural landscape in the area,” said Edith. “We have always loved the grandeur of The Carrington. It was perfect for our old-fashioned sensibilities.”

And it is these sensibilities that helped to create the theme for the day. Being devoted to all things of the 1940’s and 50’s, Edith wanted the event to be reminiscent of these eras stylistically. “I wanted the whole thing to feel like one of the jazz age ‘swell parties’.”

Even though Edith was always surrounded by Karen Willis Holmes gowns at work, she said she was unsure what direction she would take when it came time to picking her own gown. After meeting with both Karen and Francesca from the Paddington store, Edith tried a few different options but decided it was the couture Sharon gown that really captured her. “The impeccable construction and the intricate surface detailing reminded me of corsets from the Victorian era, which fit nicely with the theme.” said Edith.

Edith's gown - the couture Sharon gown.

For something extra special, Edith opted for silver fabric to be used when making the gown. “I did not plan on wearing silver but as soon as I tried it on I fell in love with the lustre of the fabric and the way the colour changed with the light.” With Edith’s beautiful red hair and milky skin, the silver contrast looked absolutely amazing on her. Edith finished her outfit with a beautiful silver garter that was made for her by a friend.

The silver colour looked especially fabulous when teamed with the gorgeous purple bouquets made by Ria Floral, Bondi. Edith entrusted all artistic direction to Ria for the floral arrangements, who created pieces filled with Burgundy David Austin roses, Queen of the Night tulips, silver Dusty Miller foliage and Juniper berries in floral arrangement stands and bouquets for Edith and her bridesmaids to carry.

The bridesmaids each wore a different black gown from Wayne Cooper, Morrissey and one bridesmaid wore a vintage black dress, while the groomsmen were donned in handsome suits from David Jones suit hire.

Michael wore a beautiful charcoal, lightweight, Australian wool suit from Farage, Strand Arcade teamed with a pair of olive coloured ostrich skin cowboy boots from Route 66, just to add some extra flair to his attire.

Music played a key part in Edith and Michael’s wedding, as Michael is a musician and Edith absolutely loves to dance. They had the “Snaketown Rattlers Swing 5 Piece” perform, along with “Wheelers and Dealers Irish Trio”. The song chosen for the first dance was “Dance Me to the End of Love” by Leonard Cohen and was actually sung by the groom.

Edith and Michael

All in all, Edith and Michael said that they had a truly wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We may be slightly biased, but we do think that their wedding was just beautiful and we love the overall look of the day.

Breaking down Bridal... Ready-to-Wear and Couture.

Breaking down Bridal…
The difference between ‘Ready-to-Wear’ and ‘Couture’

In Bridal, (and also in high-end fashion), most designers produce two types of collections, ‘Ready-to-Wear’ and ‘Couture’. While each of these terms are thrown around quite often in the media, stores and in general conversation, it can be difficult to understand exactly what the difference is between the two and exactly what it is that you are paying for with each option.

When it comes to the creation of these collections, you will find that the interpretation and ways of completing each type of work will differ from designer to designer. At Karen Willis Holmes, we offer both a Ready-to-Wear and a Couture option for the benefit of our brides. Given that there is so much to think about when you are out trying on gowns (especially in the early stages), we thought we might offer an explanation on the difference between these two options for you, so you can have some idea before trying to decide which option is best suited to your needs.

With a Couture gown, there is the freedom to have ANYTHING at all. Starting with a personal consultation, Karen works with you to design the perfect gown, made specifically to meet all your requirements. The tailoring of the gown is made-to-measure, fitted to your unique figure through a detailed process including a calico toile and five fittings. All the fittings and consultations are with Karen herself, ensuring that the gown fits perfectly and the final result will be the gorgeous 'dream dress', exactly how you had envisaged it.

If you are not sure about shapes and styles, there is a range of gorgeous Couture gown samples available to try on. If you have pictures of gowns that you love, (even if it is bits and pieces of different gowns) an original design can be made for you specially. Bring all your inspiration and ideas to the table, and Karen will help to work out the best possible option for you, tying in all the elements that you love for your perfect wedding gown.

With such a unique and personalised service, there is a higher price tag involved in Couture. All Couture gowns range from about $5,500 to $14,000 for designs similar to the styles we have. The time that goes into the detail of your gown, the amazing quality fabrics, the exceptional fit, personal fittings with Karen – all of this and more ‘behind the scenes’ action, add to the cost. The manufacturing of a bridal gown can take from 40 to 100 hours to complete to make sure it is absolutely perfect!

If you are seeking an experience with exceptional service and an exquisite one-off gown, then the couture option is for you!

Ready-to-Wear gowns are sometimes referred to as being ‘off-the-rack’. Basically this term is pretty self-explanatory, meaning you walk into a store, try a few different sizes on, and buy a gown straight off the rack (the same as buying a casual summer dress for instance). With Karen Willis Holmes Ready-to-Wear gowns, the process is much more personal than this. The stores only have sample gowns for you to try, we design these samples to be as flexible as possible so we can pin them in or let them out for all different sizes and body shapes to try.

Once you have found the other big ‘one’ in the wedding process – the gown - and decide to purchase from the Karen Willis Holmes Ready-to-Wear collection, we then make a gown for you. They aren’t mass produced and waiting for purchase out the back – they are made to order. All Ready-to-Wear gowns are made in a standard size, but we are a lot more flexible with changes that can be made. You can get ‘split sizes’ which means you can order a gown with a size 10 bust, size 8 waist and size 12 hips. This allows for a lot more flexibility with your personal body shape (as not many people are the same size throughout their body). You can also get necklines altered slightly, add extra beading, or in some cases change the fabric the gown is made of. Let the store assistants know what you are loving about the gowns when you try them on and don’t be afraid to ask questions, as there are a lot of options for you to personalise your Ready-to-Wear gown to make it just right. Similarly if something doesn’t feel quite right about the gown, be sure to vocalise this also, as there may be options we can offer for your consideration to fix the gown to be just right for you.

Included in the price of your Ready-to-Wear gown are two appointments with a fitter, in which they work to hem the gown to the right length for you and also to correctly fit your bustle. We are happy to do any other work for you if needed to fit closer to your body shape and we charge accordingly.

The manufacturing of a wedding gown this way is of the same quality and fabrics as a Couture gown, but being made to a standard size and design takes much less time, hence the competitive edge in pricing.

The price of Ready-to-Wear wedding gowns start at $1489 and go up to approx. $4000.

All of our Ready-to-Wear and Couture gowns are made using the finest imported fabrics, laces and beading and all manufacturing of the gowns is completed in our Head office and studios in Newtown, under the strict direction and supervision of Karen.

If you have no idea yet whether you are after a Couture or Ready-to-Wear gown, this is not uncommon! It is absolutely fine to feel completely lost at the start of the process – you will have a better idea once you start trying different styles on and working out what you love in a gown. If this is the case, we do recommend that you head to one of our Ready-to-Wear stores first to get a feel for the shapes and styles of our gowns, and then we can help you either find the right gown for you in the Ready-to-Wear collection, or help you organise to book an appointment with Karen for a Couture appointment.

To view our collections, head to our website

The gowns on the site are only a selection of each collection, with more options in the stores, so please feel free to come into our stores and see the full range.

New studio launch party!

We had a successful launch party last Wednesday, to celebrate the move to our new premises!
We did move last November, but we have been so busy getting the studio looking fabulous and perfect, that we only just managed to hold a party.
It was such a fun night with delicious food and drinks from Simone Logue catering, amazing music from the Accent strings Trio and, of course all our guests!
All the guests we invited were our friends, staff and industry - people who are special to us in their own way, and we had so many of them coming along to celebrate with us, which was wonderful.
I have some images from the party, as well as some images of our space looking pristine and perfect before everyone arrived to show all of you where all our gorgeous Karen Willis Holmes gowns and creations are made. There are quite a few pictures this time - enjoy!

Our front door with one of my favourite couture gowns, 'Gabriella'

Our office - where I envision all the beautiful gowns and designs...

The Workroom - where my fabulous staff make my visions a reality.

The Couture studio - where some of the gowns end up. This is where I meet with couture clients to show them (or design with them) their dream dress!

The kitchen - where we all sit for a break and a cuppa.

At our launch party, we had catering organised by Simone Logue. They provided us with the delicious canapes on the night, and a range of alcohol to keep all of us happy. The wait staff were all lovely. Here, they pose next to the perfectly set 'bar' before the guests arrive.

On the night, Jonathon from 'Hatmaker' generously agreed to bring along some marvelous head pieces. We had them on display on one of our big tables and they were just perfect - absolute works of art.

We were entertained with a mix of classical and popular music by string trio 'Accent Strings'. Their music was wonderful and all three of them were just gorgeous.

Thank you all and I hope you enjoyed all the pictures!

Love Karen and Geoff.

Couture collection summer 2010

Gabriella

Here are some more of the summer 2010 couture collection - and of course the gown we have used on the title page, obviously a favourite.
I love the shading from silk white on the neckline to a very warm cream at the hem. We used approxiamtely 90m's of organza and tulle for this little number!

Alisha
This is a beautiful fitted shape, with a soft silk satin chiffon drape at the front and finished with applique lace on the bodice panels.

Sophia (couture)
A very 1940's inspired full skirt, tiny waist finished with diamante detailing and fine chantilly lace detail on the bodice.

Sharon (couture)
It is actually hard to see in the image, but we have rows and rows of topstictching and ribbon work to achieve a visual corset effect, and flattering paneling. Quite a sexy little number.

These wedding dresses, take five fittings to fit you to perfection - which is why i love to make them,  as i see them as a work of art of soft sculpture.

BULGARI - The event – Create the Perfect Wedding

On Monday 12th October we had a wonderful evening presented by Bulgari

Place – Commencing with a cocktail in the Bulgari store and an overview of fine diamonds. Followed by a full cocktail party and bridal presentation featuring the couture gowns at The Residence at the Grand Hyatt – a new event venue styled like a large luxury apartment with double height ceilings and a blue stone courtyard with a retractable roof. The Residence overlooks Collins St on the 8th level of the Hyatt.

The Residence is a stunning venue. (i highly recomend it for a venue choice)
